Identify relevant regulations

When procuring construction projects, it can be useful to underpin sustainability criteria on existing policy and regulation. When assessing the enabling framework, it can be useful to identify, or consider establishing, the following compliance sources:

National Planning Policies
Green Building Codes
Relevant Environmental Regulations

Look for existing sustainability standards

When considering the implementation of SPP for procuring a construction project, it can be helpful to identify current sustainability standards. These will inform what requirements you set for selecting suppliers. For the construction sector, we have identified three key types of standards and accreditations:

Company accreditations
Product accreditations
Guiding accreditations

Green construction accreditations cover many aspects of construction projects, for an overview of some of the key sustainability factors, and how they can be measured during a construction project, see the next section.

Case Study Completed in 2017, the design of the Ghana Ridge Hospital was the first project in Africa to receive LEED accreditation. The design of the Ghanaian hospital is an example of how to carry out an integrated design process adapted to the needs and available resources of a local area. The project found ways to overcome the lack of electricity and water available through sustainable and innovative design. It is the first project in Africa to receive LEED accreditation.
